A quick look at what’s working, what’s not, and what I’m focusing on this month.

📊 May 2026 Snapshot

  • Handicap Update: 9.8 (⬇️ 1.2 from last month) – it’s a new low!
  • GIR: 27%, way up from 19%!
  • Driving Accuracy (Driver, 3W):
    • 24% left
    • 48% fairway (up nearly 10%!)
    • 27% right.
  • Approach Accuracy (54°, 50°, PW):
    • 60% green (up 9%)
    • 19% short, 9% long
    • 5% left, 7% right

👍 What’s Working

  • Focused on decision making. This has definitely paid off. I have been more focused generally and hit two record equalling low rounds of +6 (77).
  • Continued to focus on right arm tucking in and firm wrists on take away. I am hitting straighter off the tee and into greens with longer clubs. It’s working!
  • Not mentioned prevsously, but I have concentrated on

👎 What’s Not

Through April into May, I had some horror rounds. I also shot some of my best ever. Is this a sign of inconsistency when making swing changes?

  • Putting: Distance control remains an issue – I haven’t practised 😳.
  • Long Irons: they remain a weakness, and I’m including 7i here. Off the tee I continue to hit some howlers with these clubs, including in good rounds 🫣.
  • Driver: the occasional hook has returned. It’s an ugly sight 😑.

🎯 Focus This Month

  • Lag Putting: I have hit many three putts and my average putts per hole is up.
  • Driving: It has been very good at times. I am straighter off the tee, but I still hook occasionally. Mindset here is not to be afraid of a slice.
  • Managing Expectations: I hit two low scores of 77 (+6), including one on a course I’d never played (Atalaya New, Spain). Between these I hit one of my worst 9 hole scores in a year, a 51 (+15). I feel my concentration dropped and expectations too high.

🤔 What I Wish I Could Measure

There’s a new launch monitor that is getting great reviews that has caught my eye. It’s the new Shot Scope LM1 Launch Monitor. At £199 it sounds extremely good value for money. It’s worth a look.

🔚 Final thoughts

Early season rust has gone. I’ve hit new scoring lows and all of the sudden I am, at this moment in time, a single handicap player 🥳. Something I was striving to achieve, but wasn’t confident I’d get there in truth. I’ve done it. Can I maintain it?
